How to enable Time Machine on unsupported volumes

Although we've been mostly happy with Leopard, one of the features we were most looking forward to was the ability to set Time Machine to use a NAS volume like Airport Disk, thus making laptop backups wireless and sexy (well, sort of sexy) instead of wired and cumbersome. Sadly, Apple cut the feature at the last minute, but as with all things OS X, nirvana is usually just a defaults write command away, and Volker Weber has got it sorted for us. Just pop open a terminal window and enter:

defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

and you should be able to select NAS volumes in the Time Machine prefs. Of course, you should only re-enable this for giggles -- we don't know why Apple turned it off to begin with, and it could very well be full of bugs and hose your data. Considering some of the other glitches that have cropped up in Time Machine, we'd actually recommend staying well away from this one, but if you're desperate, by all means -- go for it and let us know how it works in comments!

Coby recalls 12,000 DVD boomboxes due to fire hazard

We've all broken down and done a little late-night discount pharmacy gadget shopping, so we promise not to judge -- but if you've got a Coby DVD boombox stashed away in your place, you might want to run and unplug it real quick. Coby's just issued a recall of 12,000 TF-DVD170 and TF-DVD176 DVD boomboxes sold between May 2006 and October 2007 because they have the unfortunate habit of overheating and starting fires. This isn't the first time we've mentioned the words "Coby," "overheat," "fire" and "recall" all in one post -- looks like 2006 was a bad year to be a Coby fanboy.

Gigabyte's Visuals: the USB gauge for your PSU

We don't want you to get your hopes all sky high for nothin', so we'll preface this by noting that Gigabyte's Visuals only operates with the firm's Odin GT-series of power supplies. For those still with us, this monitor-mountable gizmo enables users to keep a close eye on the temperature, power and fan speed of their PSU, and it gets all the juice / information it needs via USB. Granted, it's probably overkill for all but the most hardcore of overclockers, but no one here ever said that extravagance was necessarily a bad thing. Look for this one to land anytime for a currently undisclosed price, and hey, maybe next year Gigabyte will open up the compatibility list a bit, eh?

How would you change Asus' Eee PC?

The Eee PC's journey from introduction to mass production hasn't been filled with too many surprises, and aside from the obligatory price / release date speculation, unexpected Russian review and even more chatter over the almighty pricetag, it's been a pretty smooth ride. Granted, everyone and their long lost cousin was buzzing about the potential of getting a fully-featured machine in their laps for under two bills, but as these things always seem to go, final figures (for individual consumers, at least) managed to creep up a fair bit. Price hikes or not, it didn't seem to matter much come launch day, as dear ole NewEgg managed to sell right out of its initial allotment, though we're left to wonder if it didn't really have a few more to go around.

Regardless, just about everyone who managed to get ahold of Asus' little darling came away impressed, if not thoroughly pleased, with how much functionality was stuffed into a sub-$400, two-pound ultraportable. Of course, critics were not hesitant to admit that the bugger wasn't perfect, and we've all ideas that a number of you early adopters out there share similar sentiments. So without further ado, why not give the world a piece of your mind on the matter? How would you meliorate the Eee PC? Make it more functional, more fashionable or just (even) more affordable? Instructions posted for downgrading iPhone from 1.1.2 to 1.1.1

It looks like those having regrets about upgrading their iPhone to the 1.1.2 firmware now have a means of bringing their prized device back to the comforts of 1.1.1, although the process is apparently not without its faults. According to the instructions recently posted on the Hackintosh forums, you'll first need to snag a copy of the 1.1.1 ipsw firmware file, then you simply follow three relatively easy steps to dial things back to 1.1.1, after which you'll have to follow a couple of additional steps to re-activate the phone itself. On the downside, it appears that IPSF won't work on an iPhone downgraded using these measures, although an update to fix that particular problem certainly doesn't seem to be out of the question. Samsung SGH-T578H: world's first TD-SCDMA HSDPA / GSM multi-mode handset

We knew NXP and T3G were working on an automatic handover between TD-SCDMA and GSM, and now both firms are buddying up with Samsung to gloat about the unveiling of the "world's first" TD-SCDMA HSDPA / GSM multi-mode handset. The celebrated mobile is being dubbed the Samsung SGH-T578H, which is equipped with a software-defined modem capable of achieving data transfer rates of 2.8Mbps. TD-SCDMA network deployments have already been completed in ten major cities in China, and it should be upgraded to support Release 5 (HSDPA) of the TD-SCDMA standard in time for users to enjoy streaming content from the Beijing Olympics. Regrettably, there's no mention as to when the aforementioned mobile will be released, but we're sure this trio won't let it go unnoticed should that day come.

Nigeria opts for Linux on Classmate PCs after all

We're not sure if Mandriva CEO François Bancilhon's recent rant on the matter had anything to do with it or not, but it seems that Nigeria will be using the company's Linux distribution on the 17,000 Classmate PCs it purchased after all, despite earlier reports that it had switched to Windows. According to IDG News, an unnamed government official said that "we are sticking with that platform," although the official added that they reserve right to switch to another platform in the future. It appears that the situation might not be entirely settled just yet, however, as Microsoft is reportedly claiming that Nigeria is "still demanding Windows," and that it's still negotiating a deal that would give TSC (the company handling the laptops) $400,000 for "marketing activities around the Classmate PCs" once they've switched to Windows.

Paramagnetic paint lets you change your car's color on a whim

Sure, the whole "temporary vehicle paint" idea was a fine concept if you adored hassles, but Nissan's got a much cleaner approach for those who appreciate easy. Yep, the same folks who dreamed up that self-healing paint some two years back are now talking up their paramagnetic concoction, which purportedly enables motorists to change the color of their ride at the press of a button. The secret is a "special polymer containing paramagnetic iron oxide particles," which is applied to the whip's exterior; an "applied electric current then adjusts the spacing of small crystals within the iron oxide particles, and therefore affects their ability to reflect light and change color." Essentially, vehicles could rock a default color when turned off, and then your imagination could go wild once you turned over the ignition. If all goes well, expect to see commercial applications ready to roll by the time Fast and the Furious: 10 Times 2 Many hits theaters (or 2010, whichever comes first).

Asus R700 GPS unit gets official

We first got to know the Asus R300 and R700 GPS units back in September, but now Asus is finally ready to spill the rest of the sordid details on its well-specced R700 model. The Asus R700 runs a 4.3-inch touchscreen, with RDS / TMC traffic info, a hands-free Bluetooth kit, microSD port and all the trimmings inherent in Windows CE 5.0 -- including a lovable collection of media playback codecs. There's text-to-speech built in for reading street names, but the real twist comes from the ability to vocalize your text messages over Bluetooth. This model will be hitting Europe in December with a set of 3D maps and iGO 8 software for 400-500 Euro ($586-$732 US).

Vector dis 590 PND makes FCC appearance

Nothing too spectacular here, but those looking for a bare-bones GPS from a little-known manufacturer could soon be able to get their fix in the form of the Vector dis 590, which just made its all-important trek through the FCC. According to the manual, this one (which appears to be a rebadge of the Royaltek RNS-3200) boasts a 4-inch touchscreen, along with maps courtesy of NAVTEQ, an SD card slot for expansion, the usual array PMP functions, and built-in Bluetooth for some hands-free calling. You'll also apparently be able to get optional RDS-TMC traffic data, and optional "FM radios," which we assume means an FM transmitter. Of course, there's no word on pricing or availability, so you'll just have to contain your excitement until this one gets official.

HTC Touch Slide pictured ahead of October 1 announcement?

Remember that press event HTC's got coming up early next week? There are plenty of rumored HTC devices that could be announced -- and a few in particular we know readers are pulling for -- but it looks like we've got at least one here that's a lock to see the spotlight. Known to many by the codename "Nike," the HTC Touch Slide takes the original Touch's small, finger-friendly package and makes good on two of its indiscretions by adding a slide-out keyboard (similar in layout to RIM's SureType) and a 3G radio. Other features should include WiFi, 128MB of RAM, 256MB of Flash, and from what we can tell, a diminutive case that holds true to its forebear despite the fresh slide mechanism. Oh, and you NTT DoCoMo users over there, stop gloating that you've had this thing for a few weeks, would ya?

Dell gets official with webcam-packing SP2008WFP monitor

Not that it'll come as much of a surprise to anyone that followed our week o' Dell scoops, but the company has now finally gotten official with its 20-inch SP2008WFP monitor, which is particularly notable for inclusion of a built-in webcam. That cam is of the 2.0 megapixel variety, and also includes a built-in microphone to let you get in some videoconferencing with minimal clutter. Otherwise, you can expect some pretty solid specs across the board, including a 1680 x 1050 resolution, a 2,000:1 contrast ratio, a 2 ms response time, a 300cd/m2 brightness rating, and both VGA and DVI ports (with HDCP), not to mention four USB 2.0 ports. One thing we didn't know before was the price, which has now been revealed to be just $289. No complaints there.

Toyota shows off fuel cell car with 480-mile range

While we've yet to hear any more about Toyota's planned tests of its plug-in hybrid, the company has apparently made quite a bit of progress with its fuel cell vehicles, two of which recently made a non-stop 350 mile trip from Osaka to Tokyo (with the air conditioning on, no less). What's more, according to MSNBC, the vehicles still had 30 percent of their fuel remaining, giving them a total potential range of 480 miles. That's apparently more than double the range of Toyota's earlier fuel cell vehicles, a feat due in no small part to this model's ability to hold twice as much hydrogen as its predecessor (it's also 25% more efficient). While there's no word as to when any of this might actually make it into a commercially available vehicle, Toyota is apparently (slowly) headed in that direction, with it now working to boost the range even further, improve durability and, most importantly, get the cost down.

Asus intros U1E ultra-portable laptop

We just caught sight of three new Asus laptops, but it looks like that's not all the company has up its sleeve, with its ultra-portable U1E model now also making its first appearance. This one boasts an even smaller form factor than the company's just-announced 12.1-inch, 3.3 pound U6S laptop, in this case shrinking things down to an 11.1-inch WXGA display and a mere 2.2 pound carrying weight (albeit with only a 3 cell battery). Otherwise, you'll get an Intel Core Duo ULV7500 processor, up to 2GB of RAM, a 100GB hard drive, and built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, with an external DVD burner thrown in for good measure. A nine cell battery is also available for those that actually want to get some work done, with it apparently promising upwards of six hours of running time. Look for this one to be available next month, in Italy at least, for €1,999 (or $2,844).

AT&T's "Tilt" Kaiser variation spotted in the wild

It looks like that purported first pic of AT&T's version of the HTC Kaiser, dubbed the "Tilt," wasn't entirely on the mark but, as you can see from the shot of the real deal above, it wasn't too far off either. One of the most noticeable changes is a new silver dialpad of questionable taste, which sorta matches the seemingly shinier than usual navigation keys on the face of the device. Also, if you squint hard enough you'll see that there's an option to "Get TeleNav," which means that you won't be getting TomTom, and also likely means that you'll need a data connection to use it. Update: It looks like that delay we'd heard about might be for real, at least if retailer Negri Electronics is to be believed. It's now listing the Tilt with an expected in stock date of October 23rd, which is a fair bit later than the September 30th date it was quoting earlier.

Acer updates its Aspire and Ferrari series notebooks

Acer recently updated its notebook line, pushing out the Aspire 7720G and the 2920, and the Ferrari 1100. The top-end 7720G is a $3,000 desktop replacement with a 17-inch screen, ATI Mobility Radeon HD2300 graphics card, and running a 2.2GHz Santa Rosa chip. The Aspire 2920 is a 12.1-inch model, featuring Core 2 Duo CPUs, and Intel GMA X310 graphics -- yuck. Finally, there's the Ferrari 1100, featuring another 12.1-inch screen, a 2.3GHz Turion 64 X2 TL-66 processor, LED backlighting, and the usual Ferrari styling.

JVC's GR-DA30US sliding-LCD camcorder for $199 in October

Remember that funky looking JVC GR-DA20 we showed you a few weeks back? Well it turns out that its US variant -- the JVC GR-DA30US -- has a very low price too, at $199.99, shipping this October (on the 15th, if Amazon is to be believed.) The obvious stand-out feature is the sliding LCD mounted on the back of the camera, which is probably going to invoke polarized rants of "like it / love it." What's for sure is that you won't be able to do the video blogging thing and turn the LCD around on itself with this camcorder.

Transcend enters digiframe market with T.photo 710

You won't find us complaining about newcomers joining the digital photo frame biz, so it's with open arms that we welcome Transcend to the fray. Its questionably designed T.photo 710 marks the firm's first foray into this arena, and it packs a seven-inch 480 x 234 widescreen display, 1GB of internal memory, support for "ambient background music," and a multicard reader that plays nice with SD, SDHC, MMC, MS and CF cards. Furthermore, you'll find USB connectivity, support for JPEG / BMP / Motion-JPG, a musical alarm clock, various holiday themes, a wireless remote and Clock / Calendar modes that can share the screen with your photos. Unfortunately, we're still waiting for a price and release date.

Sony's Playstation Eye gets a release date

For those of you whose salivary glands have been working overtime when thinking about Sony's new Playstation Eye PS3 camera accessory (and we're sure there's at least one or two of you), you better go get a napkin. According to reports, the interactive, VGA cam will be heading out to stores bundled with Hasrbo's RPG / card game The Eye of Judgment on October 23rd, for the shockingly low price of $69.99. No word on whether that bundle will include the EyeCreate editing software, or when / if the Eye will be available on its own. Hey -- you'll probably want the game anyhow.

BenQ intros 8-megapixel C840 point-and-shoot

Keepin' the flow of new BenQ gear rolling is the C840 point-and-shoot, which claims to be the successor of the 2.5-month old C740i. This camera features an eight-megapixel CCD sensor, an SMC Pentax lens, face tracking functionality, anti-shake, 3x optical zoom, a 2.5-inch LTPS LCD monitor, red-eye reduction, ISO all the way up to 1,600, optical zoom in video recording mode and 3:2 / 16:9 output sizes. The video mode enables users to capture clips in 720 x 400 resolution at 30 frames-per-second, and there's 15 different shooting modes built-in to handle a variety of scenarios. You'll also find a paltry 6MB of internal storage, but you can (thankfully) expand that a little with an SD or SDHC card. Canon EOS 40D's early review roundup

It takes a while to put a camera like Canon's EOS 40D fully through its paces, but a few brave souls have blazed through the feature set, menus, ISOs and megapixels afforded to them by the new camera in time to get reviews up mere weeks after launch. Of course, the flashiest feature here is Live View, but the 40D is no one trick pony: unlike the minimal 20D to 30D upgrade, the 40D is all-new and packed with enhancements. Who knows if this'll be enough for Canon to get Nikon of its turf, but we'll let you read the mountains of text, peep the comparison shots and draw your own conclusions.

Leaf shows off new AFi medium-format cameras, you can't afford one

Leaf's new AFi product line is out of prototype and being shown to a lucky few on a pan-European road show -- like all great medium-format cameras should be displayed. The new AFi 7, AFi 6 and AFi 5 are 6 x 6 medium-format shooters take up to 70 shots per minute, sport Schneider AutoFocus Digital lenses designed for 30+ megapixel camera backs, and can be swapped from landscape to portrait mode by simply turning the camera back. Demo units should be out by mid-October, and you should be able to purchase one of these for some indeterminate large sum by the end of this year.

Hasselblad rolls out 39 megapixel H3D II DSLR

Hasselblad may have already hit 39 megapixels more than a year ago, but that doesn't make the company's new H3D II DSLR any less impressive, which hits that same mark with a few other improvements. Those include a new 3-inch display, which promises both a clearer view of images and lower power consumption, as well as an apparently revamped menu system that'll let you tweak settings using the thumbwheel controls on the camera. Otherwise, you can expect just about everything you could ask for in a $37,000 camera, including 48x36 mm CCD image sensors (the largest currently available), a Global Image Locator that tags photos with the exact geographic co-ordinates at the time they were taken, and an array of features that promise to keep your shots free of noise and moiré effects, to name just a few. What's more, if 39 megapixels and $37k is just a bit too much for you, you can opt for one of two lesser models that Hasselblad's also just introduced, including the 31 megapixel H3D-31II ($30,000) and the 22 megapixel H3D-22II ($25,000).

Panasonic offers up 32GB P2 memory card

It's been a short while since we've seen any news on the P2 HD front, but Panasonic is hoping to extract a few more hundies from those sold on the format by introducing a 32GB P2 card. The device, labeled AJ-P2C032RG, can be installed in sets of five into the AJ-HPX3000 and HPX2000 P2 HD camcorders for recording "up to 2.5 hours (over 3 hours in 24p) of footage in AVC-Intra 100 or DVCPRO HD and 5 hours (over 6.5 hours in 24p) in AVC-Intra 50 or DVCPRO 50." As you'd probably expect, this sucka won't run you cheap, as it's expected to demand a staggering $1,650 when it hits in November.

Triops camera reacts to sound, motion, or manual triggers

A finalist in the BraunPrize2007, Franziska Faoro's Triops is a camera equipped with three fisheye lenses designed to take photos at moments you may not expect. It reacts to motion and movement -- so if you throw it in the air, or yell at it, it'll take a snap -- but it also has a manual mode in case you want full control. The idea of Triops is to meld the experience of taking a photo with the photo itself: the end pictures are all 360 degree panoramas, so you'll have to chuck it pretty far to be out of frame. It looks like it's a concept for now, although Franziska has thought to include designs for a dock, viewing screen, and even a simple UI on the device for controlling aspects of the shots. Hopefully this'll make it into production soon.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX55 reviewed

Panasonic first took the wraps off its Lumix DMC-FX55 camera back in July, but reviews of it have been fairly slow in coming, with the folks PhotographyBLOG seemingly among the first to offer their take. On the whole, they seem to have been mightily impressed with the camera, and especially its better than usual 28mm wide-angle lens, quick focusing, and its "Intelligent Auto" mode, which they say provided "great results in most situations." They also found the overall image quality to be improved over previous generation Lumix models, with the camera's new image stabilization system a welcome addition. On the downside, the camera apparently proved to be less adept at higher ISO settings, with the ISO 800 and 1600 settings virtually useless due to noise. The seems to have been an acceptable compromise, however, as PhotographyBLOG goes as far as to call it a "fantastic" point-and-shoot camera, and giving it an impressive 4.5 out of 5 rating.

iFixit digs deeper into iPod touch Bluetooth mystery -- discovers 802.11a

So you all remember that not-so-conclusive iFixit teardown of the iPod touch right? The one we all hoped would bring an end to those Bluetooth rumors once and for all. Well, they've updated their findings at our request with more information about the WiFi chipset. What they found was a Marvell W8686B22 802.11a/b/g WiFi system-on-chip inside. Yes, 802.11a according to iFixit, which on its own is interesting since Apple only claims b/g support. The iPhone you'll recall, has a similar Marvell W8686B13 for WiFi and seperate CSR 41B14 BlueCore4ROM chip providing the Bluetooth. Of course others like Wi2Wi, have integrated the Marvell WiFi die with Bluetooth for their own single-chip solutions. However, in that case we'd expect to see Wi2Wi branding on the chipface. So what's the answer? Nobody knows. As unlikely as it may be, iFixit contends that they, "cannot confirm nor deny the presence of Bluetooth in this device."

T-Mobile announces BlackBerry Curve with WiFi, we check it out

RIM decided (and we tend to agree) that it could improve upon the already solid BlackBerry 8300 Curve by adding GPS or WiFi -- carrier's choice -- in the form of the 8310 and 8320, respectively. T-Mobile has announced today the release of the 8320 variant, offering @Home branded UMA service and speedy data to supplement T-Mobile's EDGE network (in hotspot range, anyway) in your choice of "titanium" and carrier-exclusive "pale gold." We've had a few minutes to play around with the champagne hued version, and with WiFi added into the Curve's already solid mix, it pretty much goes without saying that this is the best BlackBerry yet. Setting up our wireless network on the Curve was a breeze, though we had some trouble keeping calls from dropping over an Airport Extreme; fortunately, T-Mobile's offering up optimized Linksys routers for a song, and you can always set it up as a separate network if you can't bear to tear down your 802.11a/n setup. We've heard some intermittent reports of Curves starting to show up in retail locations, but we can expect them to start shipping everywhere in early October. Sophia Systems's Sandgate 3-P runs Linux

Sophia Systems, a Japanese company, has developed the Sandgate 3-P, a reference design for an IP phone that can run Windows CE, Windows Mobile 6, and Linux. The 3-P isn't a final device for marketing to the consumer: instead, it's designed to give manufacturers a reference for building similar devices. Obviously, the first place the manufacturers will start is the external design -- this thing's ugly -- but inside, the 3-P is a relatively high spec device. It features a 624MHz CPU, a 2.2-inch QVGA display, and 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, and W-SIM technology which integrates an antenna into the thumbnail sized card. Part of the package are a variety of tools designed to help manufacturers out, including install options for the three different OSes: something we kinda wish wasn't limited to back-end phone designers.

OLPC announces $399 "Give 1 Get 1" holiday XO promo

Starting November 12th you can finally fork over some cash for an XO and get one shipped to your door -- as long as you're willing pay double for some kid in a developing nation to get one as well. It'll cost you $399, which is hardly a bargain given the other cheap-as-free laptops making the rounds these days, but the XO is undoubtedly novel, and we imagine not a few nerds will want to get their hands on one this holiday season, or at least bestow the little green machine upon one of their nerdling progeny. Apparently this offer, which has been rumored for quite a while now, will only last for a limited time -- OLPC News has it on good authority the promo will go for two weeks, and the machines will ship to your door in time for Christmas -- but it's never to early or late to donate toward the project in general. $200 will build and ship a laptop to one of those millions of kids who totally needed to be playing Doom yesterday.

Keepin' it real fake, part LXXXI: New iPod nano clones unveiled, thanks China

The first third-gen iPod nano fake we spotted was kind of low on details, so we're glad to see YJL giving it to us straight here with the new U2-C player. Innovative features include MP4, MP3 and WMA playback, mass storage support (what a novel idea!), voice recording, "A-B repeat" and an FM tuner. Clearly the iPod nano can never hope to compete, but good try Apple, you'll lick 'em next time. No word on capacities or price, but these things can't be far from eBayability.

Pasen "debuts" motion sensitive ShakeIT PMP, slew of rebrands

If you're looking for some fresh and exciting PMP action, perhaps Pasen can help you out. After the company's unmitigated failure at ripping off the iPhone, the Chinese media player-maker has turned its attentions to the use of accelerometers with the ShakeIT. Continuing the habit of unoriginal ideas, Pasen has rebranded a Telcast player -- which sports a 2.8-inch, QVGA, 320 x 240 screen, 2GB of memory, and the ability to play all your favorite formats (AVI, FLV, MP3, WMA, APE, FLAC, JPEG, GIF and BMP). The hook here, of course, is the player's ability to shuffle through pictures, menu items, or songs by being shaken one way or another -- a feature likely to get a number of these thrown across a room. On the plus side, this player will apparently be the first to use Microsoft's PlayFX suite, which does 3D headphone effects and volume normalizing. The company also "officially" announced two other players, the TouchMusic, a Telcast touchscreen PMP rebrand, and the A19, yet another rebrand of a PMP / digital camera first introduced by KBS Industrial. YouNeverCall offers cash for first cell call from the moon

We have bad enough luck with cellphone coverage in our own apartment to worry much about balls of dirt floating around in space, but YouNeverCall is tacking a slim $10k onto Google's existing $30 million in moon-related prize money for the first cellphone call made by a device or a person on the moon, so if you're headed there any time soon you might want to give it a shot. Sure, $10k probably pales in comparison to the expense of even adding a phone and related hardware to the payload -- not to mention those hefty interstellar roaming charges -- and it mainly seems like a bit of cheap PR for the YouNeverCall peeps, but we like the concept of a moon rover doing something more than just roaming and pesky science while it's chilling out way up there. Whoever or whatever is making the call will need to be able to answer some simple questions while on the phone, and the call must pass through a commercially avaialble cellphone -- though technical details are murky beyond that. Secondary prizes are also on offer for first SMS message and first usage for the Crazy Frog Ringtone.

Samsung and Giorgio Armani team up on mobile phones, LCD TVs

In an exciting peanut-butter-in-my-chocolate development, Samsung has announced its plans to manufacture new products jointly designed with famed fashion magnate Giorgio Armani (of course, we knew this was coming). According to reports, Giorgio and the company are teaming up for the development of a "luxury" mobile phone, as well as a "luxury" LCD television, both of which are rumored to be extremely "luxurious." The phone (which we first heard about in July) will make its first "official" appearance at an Armani fashion show in Milan, Italy, while the television will rear its gorgeous head sometime in January. "This powerful partnership will match great design with leading technology to ensure performance is as impressive as appearance," said Yun Jong-Yong, vice chairman of Samsung. Could this be the company's answer to LG's Prada mash-up? We think yes.

Enable disk use on your iPod touch

While lugging around quarterly reports is likely to be low on your list of reasons to pick up an iPod touch, you may still long for that "Enable disk use" checkbox that you can't access with the aforementioned device. If that's you, word on the street has it that iPod touch owners can simply download a certain bunch of "Media Folder utilities to copy files to and from" your unit. Reportedly, the utilities are "based around a modified version of iPhuc, work with the iPhone as well as the touch and copy files to and from the Media / Documents folder." Infinity and JBL's PS212W and CSS10W wireless subwoofers

Although the humble subwoofer is probably the least likely to require placement inside a space that's beyond cable reach -- or concealment -- thanks to its non-directional sound frequencies, JBL and Infinity have teamed up to solve the problem anyway. The PS212W is a 12-inch $679 400W sub with an included 2.4GHz wireless transmitter / receiver bundled: yes, that's 2.4GHz, the same frequency nearly all your other wireless kit uses. JBL's Cinema Sound CSS10W also uses this overused frequency for its wireless, but it's only 10-inch and 300W, and will retail at the lower price of $559 when it launches in January next year.

For Windows Mobile users, the HTC Kaiser / TyTN II / MDA Vario III / AT&T 8925 ("Tilt") US release is equivalent in excitement to the launch of another handset widely anticipated by Apple fans, but unlike the iPhone, poor WinMo diehards have no definitive date at which to target their enthusiasm. We've heard numerous rumored release windows before -- and most recently, word of yet another possible delay -- with none having panned out so far, meaning you should take the following tidbit with the usual skepticism: e-tailer Negri Electronics has started taking pre-orders on both the 8925 (pictured above) and camera-less 8900, and claims that units are expected to be in stock on Sunday, September 30th. If the photo they're running is indeed the AT&T production version, potential buyers can be somewhat relieved that the color scheme has not changed from the unlocked model (unlike the fugly offering from T-Mobile Germany), but as we expected, the front cam and all possibility of hacked video calling have been eliminated. Chinavision's CVASQ-C811 does it all, without style

At this point simple NES emulation is pretty run-of-the-mill on most dubiously-legal Chinese PMPs, so it looks like Chinavision is going to the gusto with the new CVASQ-C811 PMP. In addition to rocking the NES action, the ever-so-subtly-designed unit can also play Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Genesis games when placed in its dorky little gaming dock. Other than that, you're looking at a pretty-run-of-the-mill PMP: 2GB of storage with SD expansion, 3-inch 320 x 240 screen, AVI-only video support, and mass storage compatibility. When you get bored of video games, Chinavision has also thoughtfully included an ebook reader, so if you're not opposed to constantly letting others see you hold this thing you might be able to catch up on some reading. It looks like the 811 is available now for $85, including the gaming dock, stand, and neck strap -- just in case you never wanted a date again.

Multiplayer PSOne gameplay emulated over WiFi-linked PSPs

A hacker called "AhMan" has created a software mod that enables two PSPs to play PSOne games over an adhoc WiFi connection, although apparently this software is in early development -- really, when isn't this kind of hack? For now the evidence is a YouTube video showing a pair of PSPs playing synchronized two player PSOne games, so we'll have to give them to benefit of the doubt that it's actually legit. If it is, you should be able to procure the software required within a reasonable amount of time: if you're willing, of course, to jump through the usual series of firmware related hoops to get there.

Panasonic’s Sumo Class R4

The race to create the lightest, fastest notebook is getting old. So Panasonic, and other Japanese laptop makers, are changing the stakes: now it’s all about durability. Hence Panasonic’s latest Let’s Note CF-R4j notebook, which claims to have a 218 lb. weight resistance (up from 110 lb. in the previous version). The notebook is unchanged in just about every other way (including the ability to withstand a 12-inch drop). But the durability champ is still NEC, which has a notebook with 330 lb. of weight resistance.
The new R4j will be available in Japan starting February 10.

BusinessWeek is reporting that technology powerhouse, Microsoft, is working on plans to develop some type of portable media player to rival the iPod. There is no confirmation whether this device will actually happen, but some little birdies within the corporation said that Microsoft has assembled a team that is analyzing the business aspect of such a venture. Also no confirmed word yet if this device will carry some Xbox branding and play video games, but Peter Moore—head Xboxer—said that the media device would need to take advantage of Microsoft’s leverage in the video gaming industry and using the Xbox brand and including video games would be an opportunity. It must be time for a Thunderdome round 2 between Gates and Jobs.

In the seemingly endless parade of iPod knockoffs, here comes just one more, this one a nano rip that can also play video. The Thanko Corporation from Japan announced its TPod neo 1G, a DAP with a 1.5-inch display which supports video playback if you don’t mind squinting at that postage-stamp-sized screen. It doesn’t look quite as svelte as the iPod nano and its flash memory holds just a gigabyte of data, but it certainly is an expert in the video department, able to play back lots of types of video files including MTV/AMX, AVI, MPEG, and WMV. The price is not bad, either, at $144.

Today we gave you the sad news that Sony may not be producing robotic dogs anymore, but it looks like the consumer electronics giant has made another cost-cutting move, deciding to close its Walkman plant in Japan and no longer make the devices in-country. What that means for the Walkman as a brand, I’m not sure, but by March 2007, the Saitama, Japan plant will be closed down for good.

Yesterday we showed you Pantech’s music phone and today we have another nice surprise from the Korean wunderkind (though remember, it is only the second largest cellphone manufacturer in the country). Take a gander at the IM-U100 portable multimedia phone. This thing comes with MP3 player, camera and movie functions and has a pretty big 15:9 TFT LCD screen at 2.6 inches. Other multimedia features include a 2 megapixel camera, a loud speaker, external T-Flash memory and an Analog Mode Dial on the back of the phone which lets you easily get to all these goodies. Also liking the multitasking function, which will allow you to do a few things at once (play games while listening to music). Who needs concentration anyhow? Should cost about $550.

One-segment broadcasting is a service that allows you to watch terrestrial digital broadcasts from mobile phones and other devices. It will be available in Japan starting April 1. And Hitachi has produced a mobile phone to capitalize on this, it’s the W41H, and will be supplied by au. It has a 2.7-inch LCD display that can be twisted around and folded over. This is called "view style" and when it is placed on the charging stand, the one-segment TV tuner starts automatically. You can watch for about 3 hours 45 minutes. Maximum recording time is around 30 minutes. With the music function, services from au like "au LISTEN MOBILE SERVICE (LISMO) ", "au Music Player", and "au Music Port" can be used as well. Playlists can be attached to mail and sent. It has a miniSD slot, and SD-Audio music files can also be played. It also has a digital camera (2.07-megapixel), of course. The size is 2 x 4.1 x 1.1 inches, and the weight is 5.6 oz. Price TBA.

First Ben-Q announces a tie-in with Siemens to make cellphones and now we have news of the P50 smartphone/PDA. It offers quad-band coverage and runs on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 2003 (that’s a bit odd, huh?). The insides are powered by an Intel PXA272 416MHz processor and it has 64MB of SDRAM and 64MB of Flash ROM. Throw in the 2.83-inch TFT LCD and you’ve got a nice-lookin’ and pretty powerful device. Also included is a 1.3-megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom, WLAN, GPRS, Bluetooth, IrDA, USB, and SDIO and a four-hour talk time. Goes for about $650.

Talus plans to have another model in its lineup called the Talus Timeline, an elongated rectangular watch where the hour numeral starts at the top and slowly floats down as the hour progresses. I suppose these watches, neither of which has been manufactured yet, would be great for those of us bloggers who make up the ranks of the pajamahadeen, but for button-down office types, not sure the boss would care for the idea of you showing up for work at “around 10.”
